Dr. Janice K. Neal, educator, orator, author, performance artist, is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. She grew up memorizing and reciting literature. Now an associate professor in the Department of Speech and Dramatic Art at Jackson State University, Neal encourages students to understand poetry and prose so as to perform them as though the authors were present.
Neal has performed storytelling all around the United States and in Belize, Central America. Audiences remember her for her dynamic vocal and bodily expressions that aid in depicting the intended meanings of the authors' works.
Her plays include Inner City Faces, Black Men Standing Tall, and Going Back Home. She received the Editior's Choice Award from the National Library of Poetry for her narrative poem "Medgar Took a Stand." Other poems include "Do You Know Margaret Walker Alexander?", "The BMW," "The Mad Method," "Madam C.J. Walker", and "In Martin Was a Dream."
