March 2008
March 8, "Herstory," an International Woman's Day Celebration, featuring the Huntsville Feminist Chorus and other local performers, 7:30 p.m., Roberts Recital Hall, UAH.
Free Admission.
In
addition to the Huntsville Feminist Chorus, performing artists are
Marylyn Coffey, puppeteer Anna Sue Courtney, historian Jane E.
Deneefe, poet Kim Estelle, actor/vocalist Kaye Lewis-Jones, and
dancer Sycamore. Marylyn Coffey will celebrate “The Secret Loves of
Calamity Jane” in song and lecture. “Apparitions and
Disappearances” is a puppetwork by Anna Sue Courtney, inspired by
the magical realist paintings of Mexican artist
Remedios Varo, set to the Spanish poetry of her compatriot
Octavio Paz. Courtney will be joined in this piece by Kim Estelle.
Historian Jane E. Deneefe’s “Florian Family Letters” traces family
ties and tastes from France to New Orleans and Alabama.
Actress/vocalist Kay Lewis-Jones (seen recently as Christine in
Four Spirits at UAH) will perform a “Tribute to Rosetta Jones,”
honoring her mother in song and spoken word. “At the Edge” is a
contemporary dance work by Sycamore, in praise of wild creatures in
their wild habitats and the long-term study of tigers and elephants
by ecological activist Sy
Montgomery. This will be an evening of performances about, by, or inspired by women.
