Social Cognition and Teamwork
Research in Dr. Carpenter's Social Cognition and Teamwork lab focuses on cognitive representations of the self and groups across cultural contexts, as well as work team dynamics and performance. Groups and group membership have different meanings across cultures, with collectivists being more likely to give group goals priority over their individual goals. Research in our lab has indicated that there are also individual differences within a culture, with allocentrics acting like collectivists within the individualistic culture of the United States. Allocentrics perceive groups as being more coherent unities than do non-allocentrics, and this impacts their performance during group decision-making. Aspects of personality, culture, and cognition can affect interactions between team members as well as the overall team performance. Currently, we are investigating how mental models (i.e., schemas) for teamwork and taskwork influence the team process and products.
