Why study a foreign culture?

While many private reasons
lead some to folks beyond our borders,
patriotism provides a public reason
to listen to those who look, sound or think differently than we do,
or who have a different recent or deep history.

Foreign languages
can strengthen our homeland security
by helping us to understand people
in other countries.

We study foreign cultures
so that they will cease to seem foreign to us,
and toward the day
when we will seem more comprehensible
to them.

Folklore and Mythology. For anyone interested in fairy tales and such.
Großer Stammbaum der griechischen Mythologie. Systematic treatment of Greek mythology.

College German. A user friendly site for both language and literature -- including a bilingual edition of the Brothers Grimm.
Gutenberg. They have a wide variety of reading material online.
Lyrikwelt. A forum for original verse.

The Haiku Society of Germany. Die deutsche Haiku-Gesellschaft.
Haiku. Another forum for German haiku writers.

Culture (Generally)

Gifts for special occasions. You can spend your money here too.

Restaurants. Quite a few to choose from.

Films. A fairly wide selection.

Austria. The country's official website.

Arts. Pearls from the arts sections of leading newspapers.

Any city in Germany. Replace the name that's there with the one you want. If you need an umlaut, use "e": example, Muenchen.

Forschungsinstitut fuer deutsche Sprache / Deutscher Sprachatlas (Marburg). A linguistics institute, originally founded for the study of German dialects and still the place to start, if that's what you're interested in.
