English Major Wins Thesis Award

Five students from the UAHuntsville  Honors Program recently presented their researchDaniel Schenker and Gloria Powell at the University of Alabama System Honors Research Day, held in April 2007 at the Honors House at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.   Gloria Powell, a senior in the English Department, won first place in the Arts and Humanities division for her presentation, “The Pursuit of Desire in the Works of T. S. Eliot.”  Her faculty advisor is Dr. Daniel Schenker.

David Schenker Visits the Department with his Parents

Dr. Daniel Schenker and Amanda Kay Schenker brought their son David to the office during spring break, and he was quite a hit. David will be two in May.

Sinceree Gunn Returns from Leave

Sinceree Gunn took maternity leave this spring after the birth of her son Brendan in December, shown here visiting the office with Brendan's older sister Autumn Rose. Sinceree will be teaching summer school.

Jennifer Kelly brought baby Jackson by in May. Born November 21, he is almost six months old. Jennifer will return to part-time teaching this fall.

 

 

 

Undergraduates Publish Research Study

Ruth, Beth, Mario, Dr. BellThree undergraduate English majors have had a paper accepted for publication. Ruth Johnson, Mario Burton, and Beth Clark took an independent study (EH 499) in fall 2006l from Dr. Diana Bell, focusing on writing center pedagogy. They attended the Southeastern Writing Center Association Conference in Nashville in February 2007 to present the paper that they completed for that course, and it has now been published in a refereed journal called Young Scholars in Writing.

 

At that same conference, Ruth Johnson won the SWCA award for the Tutor of the Year. SWCA is the most active regional writing center association in the country. Ruth is a double major in English and Communication Arts and will graduate this summer.

New Writing Center Director

Alanna Frost will join the English department in August as Assistant Professor and Director of the Writing Center. After completing her MA in English UAH, Ms. Frost went on to pursue the Ph.D. in Composition Studies at the University of Louisville. She will be defending her dissertation this summer.


New and Notable

New Program
UAH now offers an Intensive English Program (IEP) for students who are not yet admitted to an academic degree program at the university.The IEP serves students whose English language skills are not yet high enough for study in a regular academic program at the university. Nonnative speaking students can come to UAH and study in the IEP before applying for admission to the university as undergraduate or graduate students. For more information on the program, the curriculum and costs, go to the IEP site or email the director of the IEP at iep@uah.edu.

UAH also provides an ESL program to support the further language development of students who are in undergraduate or graduate degree programs at the university.
