Major Novelist to Return to UAHuntsville
naslund

Novelist Sena Jeter Naslund will return to UAH as Eminent Scholar in the Humanities during spring semester 2010, when she will teach fiction writing and give a variety of talks.  This will be her second term as Eminent Scholar at UAH.

Enrollment in Naslund’s class, EH 412/512: Form of Fiction, is limited to fifteen students, including both undergraduate and graduate students, and requires submission of a writing sample by October 15 to the UAH English Department. The course combines analytic and creative writing.  In the first part of the course, students study the unity of subject, structure, and style in modern and contemporary fiction. While the elements of subject, structure, and style combine to give any artistic entity its distinctive identity, the class will also explore the interrelatedness of additional aspects of fiction—plot, character, theme, setting, atmosphere, point of view, tone, and pace. In response to the assigned reading of published fiction, students may write either critical essays or their own creative fiction, or some of each. Student writing will be discussed in workshop sessions.

Elephant Engine High Dive Revival at UAH October 23
Elephant Engine High Dive Revival, a nationally recognized troupe of performance poets, will be at UAH on Friday, October 23 for a lecture at 3:30 p.m. and a performance at 7. The topic of their talk is “The Business of Art”---what it means to be a professional poet, touring and publishing poetry. This is their third year touring this show, and some of them have appeared on The Tonight Show and on the HBO series “Def Poetry.”

Their show is not exactly a poetry slam (but they are slam poets and spoken word professionals), not exactly comedy (though there is humor), and probably not like anything you’ve ever seen before. It’s been described as a "rock concert, improv show, dance party and poetry reading all rolled into one." Members of the group include Anis Mojgani (a two-time Individual National Poetry Slam Champion), Derrick Brown (opening artist for The White Stripes and the  Cold War Kids),  Shappy Seasholtz (another National Poetry Slam Champion), and Shira Erlichman (Pushcart Prize nominee and one-woman band). Derrick Brown is also the founder of Write Bloody Publishing, an independent press based in Murfreesboro, TN. You can see video of these and other slam poets associated with EEHDR on their My Space page (linked above, or at,) http://www.myspace.com/2009elephant_revival_tour.

Both events are at the University Center Exhibit Hall and are free and open to the public. These events are produced by the UAHuntsville English Dept, Theatre Arts, and Women’s Studies, with major support from UAH Student Affairs. The UAH Humanities Center and Poetry Out Loud are sponsoring the lecture. For further information, call 824-6320 or see uah.edu/english/whatsnew.

Writing Center News
The Writing Center has a new location in Madison Hall 123 as part of the Student Success Center. Although students may still drop in, the Student Success Center strongly advises that students schedule tutoring appointments through TutorTrac, the online scheduling program. Writing consultations will last for fifty minutes and students may participate at any stage of their writing project. For Fall 2009, the Writing Center welcomes five returning tutors and five new tutors. Sheila Knight is the GTA and Sandra Shattuck is the Director. To schedule in-class or on-site visits, please contact Sheila Knight at sheila.knight@uah.edu. For any other concerns, please contact Dr. Shattuck at sandra.shattuck@uah.edu.
