1. Determine whether it’s a figure or table.

Tables have columns and rows.

Figures are everything else.

2. Give it a numbered heading.

e.g., Table 1, Table 2, or Figure 1, Figure 2

3. Give it a title or caption.

Tables have titles

Table titles usually go above the table.

Figures have captions

Figure captions usually go below the figure.

4. Acknowledge your source.

Give the full reference (not just author and year).

5. Label all parts

For tables: every column needs a heading

For figures: label only the relevant parts

6. Refer to the figure or table in the text before the reader comes to the illustration.

The minimum is "See figure 1" or "see table 2."

7. Prepare the final copy carefully

Design so that the visual speaks for itself.
