John S. (Jerry) Mebane specializes in Shakespeare and Renaissance literature and culture. He has broad interests in literature, religion, and warfare, and has taught interdisciplinary courses in that area. He is the author of Renaissance Magic and the Return of the Golden Age: The Occult Tradition and Marlowe, Jonson and Shakespeare (Univ. of Nebraska Press, 1989); Cymbeline, The Winter's Tale, and The Tempest: An Annotated Bibliography of Shakespeare Studies, 1864-2000 (Pegasus Press, 2002); and of articles and reviews in Renaissance Drama, College English, Texas Studies in Literature and Language, Shakespeare Yearbook, South Atlantic Review, Renaissance Papers, Studies in Philology, and other journals.
Dr. Mebane strives to integrate in-class dramatic readings, film, and live performances into his classes. For many years he has chaired the joint Huntsville Literary Association /UAH committee that brings Shakespearean performances by the nationally respected American Shakespeare Center on Tour to UAH each spring.

They have three grown children (David, Alan, and Hannah); a granddaughter (Scarlet), grandsons (Keegan & Spencer); a cat (Cuchulain); and a live-in granddog (Coltrane).
