What can I do with an English major? This site, published by the Western Washington University English Department, describes the value of any liberal arts degree and provides links to career paths for English majors.

Association of Departments of English (ADE)

This organization collects and publishes data about the profession.  The site is a good resource for statistics on trends in English studies, including numbers of degrees granted and job placements, mainly for Ph.D.s.  (See Surveys, Reports, and Other Documents.) They also coordinate construction of professionally recognized policy statements regarding treatment of college English faculty.  See also the Job Information List that this organization manages.

Authorlink

While this site is primarily a showcase for (paying) submitters hoping to find agents and/or book publishers, it also offers a wealth of information for those interested in publishing book-length fiction (including genre-fiction). Various publishers have listed their specific submission requirements, including their preferences on queries versus full manuscripts, length of novels they accept, etc.

Modern Language Association (MLA)

MLA is the major professional organization in both English studies and foreign languages and literatures.  It publishes the widely-used MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, as well as the prestigious scholarly journal PMLA, and many scholarly books on the teaching of literature.  The annual convention, always held Dec 27-30, is the major site for interviewing for college teaching jobs in English and foreign languages.  The organization awards prizes, sponsors commissions on professional issues, and develops education and public policy positions.

MLA's Advice to Graduate Students - This pages starts with picking a graduate school and goes through obtaining financial aid, and looking for both academic and non-academic jobs.
