Mission

The Department of Education is one of twelve departments in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The Department works collaboratively within the academic diversity of the College and with the College of Science to promote academic excellence and social awareness. The multi-disciplinary community within which the Department is situated affords us unique opportunities to help candidates integrate the diverse intellectual and social elements of learning in a dynamic world. The UAH Department of Education defines its mission through three elements:
  • To prepare teachers who are academically strong, competent in theory and practice, and prepared to help resolve the educational needs of our complex society;

  • To provide a supportive environment that encourages faculty to model sound pedagogical practices, to engage in research and scholarship, and to become leaders within their areas of expertise;

  • To make our teaching, research, and service available to the academic community of UAH and to the schools, organizations, and professional communities extending from our region to the national and international communities.

Vision: Through Teaching We Lead

We believe that professional teaching combines an imaginative and empathic understanding of learners with a rigorous, research-based body of pedagogical knowledge. These components must be enfolded with a substantive preparation from within the disciplinary knowledges. We want our candidates to be educators who are reflective leaders, committed to the continuing development of dispositions and skills that become manifested in their own practices as an elevated balance of both support and challenge for learners.

The establishment of the theme Through Teaching, We Lead, codifies the major purpose of our department: to graduate teachers who are exceptionally well-prepared in disciplinary, pedagogical, and professional knowledge, who understand and are prepared to address the needs of all learners, and who are committed to serving as leaders in the educational community to ensure that all students receive a high-quality public or private education.
