Collaborative Teacher-Special Education Endorsement (6-12 Certification)
Collaborative Teacher-Special Education Endorsement
(6-12 Certification)
The Collaborative Teacher-Special Education Program is an endorsement that can be added to an Alabama Class A Secondary program. The program prepares teachers to meet the diverse needs of all children, including those who have been determined to be exceptional and who receive services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Students in the Collaborative Program complete courses and participate in extensive field experiences that introduce them to a variety of exceptionalities and help them become aware of the critical issues relevant to the delivery of services to exceptional children.
Graduate candidates who choose to add the Collaborative Teacher area of study to their first teaching field (English, history, biology, etc.) should seek advisement from the Certification Officer and the special education advisor in the Education Department. Candidates will complete the 21 hours of special education coursework listed below and a special education internship in a middle or high school after they successfully complete their middle/high school internship. Candidates who meet these requirements will be eligible to apply for a Class B Collaborative Teacher certificate along with the Class A (graduate) certificate in their teaching field.
Candidates will complete the following courses in addition to ED 593 – Teaching Exceptional Children.
EDC 302 – Introduction to Low Incidence Populations
EDC 311 – Instructional Strategies
EDC 321 – Collaborative Consultation
EDC 331 – Critical Issues in Special Education
EDC 341 – Transitions of K-12 Students
EDC 351 – Behavioral Analysis and Intervention
