Before coming to UAH, Dr. O'Brien worked for nine years teaching elementary school and high school in Florida where he taught first through fifth grade and ninth through twelfth grade. While working on his graduate degrees, Dr. O’Brien also worked as a member of the adjunct faculty for the University of South Florida, in Tampa, Florida from 1999-2008 where he taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in teaching social studies methods. He is the co-author of Passport to Learning: Teaching Social Studies to ESL Students, one of the first texts to specifically address how to teach social studies content to students whose first language is not English. Dr. O’Brien believes that the primary goal of education is to create a class of “effective citizens” rather than to rank and sort students using standardized test scores.
Currently, his research interests include examining how social studies teachers can improve the experiences of ELLs in social studies classes, citizenship education in the elementary classroom, and effective teacher preparation.
