Major in Communication Arts
Students wishing to major in communication arts should make that declaration at or before the beginning of the sophomore year, and schedule a meeting with the chair of Communication Arts after filing the appropriate forms in the Office of Student Records. Students need to work closely with a faculty advisor to plan a program of study.
A major in communication arts consists of either 33 or 40 hours of coursework within the department, at least 18 or 21 hours of which (respectively) must be at or above the 300 level. Transfer students must take at least 12 hours of upper-level coursework in the major at UAH. All majors are required to take the following three core courses:
CM 113 Introduction to Rhetorical Communication
CM 231 Foundations of Human Communication
CM 370 Communication Methods
Additionally, majors must elect one of the following tracks and take the required core of communications.
Rhetoric Track (33 Hours Total)
CM 309 History of Rhetoric OR CM 331 Communication Theory
CM 375 Rhetorical Criticism
CM 431 Senior Seminar
15 hours of electives from CM or approved courses in allied disciplines Must have a total number of 18 hours of CM courses at 300 level or above.
Technical Communications Track (40 Hours Total)
CM 301 Technical Writing
CM 302 Technical Editing
CM 309 History of Rhetoric
CM 320 Practicum in Writing OR CM 400 Communication Arts Internship
CM 370 Communication Methods
CM 402 Theory and Practice in Technical Communications
15 hours of electives from CM or approved courses in allied disciplines which must include 6-9 hours of technical courses (such as from MIS). Must have a total number of 21 hours of CM courses at 300 level or above.
