Our art history faculty offers surveys of art from the ancient to the modern period and a variety of more specialized topics in upper division courses. In addition to survey courses, the art history faculty teaches upper division courses in Greek, Roman, Medieval, and Renaissance art. Offerings in the areas of 19th- and 20th- century art include courses in Impressionism and contemporary art. All courses explore the cultural circumstances in which art is created. Opportunities for independent study in a student's area of interest are also available.

Required Courses

In addition to the General Education Requirements for the B.A., students who major in art history must complete three 100 level Art History Survey Courses:

  • ARH 100 Art History Survey: Ancient to Medieval
  • ARH 101 Art History Survey: Renaissance to Modern
  • ARH 103 Art History Survey: Art in Non-Western Traditions
  • and also:
  • Any two 100 level Art Studio Courses
  • One 200 level Art Studio course
  • the upper division requirements are:
  • ARH 309 Contemporary Art and Issues
  • Five additional Art History courses at the 300 level or above
  • ARH 400 Art History Seminar
  • One 300 level Art Studio course

Scholarships, Awards, Recognition

The Department, the University, and private benefactors offer a number of scholarships for incoming and continuing students.

The Bromberg Scholarship in Fine Arts is awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Fine Arts. The Shelbie King Scholarship, available to both Art and Art History majors, is given to students who graduated from an AL. high school and is based on financial need and academic merit. Additionally, there are numerous opportunities to exhibit student work that include competitions for scholarships and cash prizes. The Evans Best of Show Award, a cash award, and the Jeffrey Bayer Memorial Scholarship are chosen by the art faculty based on the quality of artwork juried into the annual Student Art exhibition.

Additional scholarship awards are provided to entering freshmen who meet a qualified ACT score requirement. Transfer students are eligible for other scholarship awards.

The Department of Art and Art History offers a BA with a concentration in studio art, art history, or studio art with teacher certification.

Career Opportunities

Diverse career opportunities for Art and Art History graduates are offered in many related fields. Art historians find employment teaching at the university level, in museums as curators and education directors, and in major commercial galleries. An art history degree is an excellent springboard to related graduate programs such as library science and law. Art offers many career opportunities that are challenging and enriching.

Organizations and Opportunities

The Student Advertising Federation at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (SAF@UAH) is affiliated with the Tennessee Valley Advertising Federation. The UAH Cooperative Education (Co-op) Program enriches academic work with formal on the job training and professional contacts. The UAH art club, is open to all students regardless of their major.
