Society for Ancient Languages

The Society for Ancient Languages was founded by students, faculty, and members of the community who all wished to foster the study of Latin in Huntsville beyond the four-course sequence offered at UAH. Everyone is more than welcome to attend, but a basic knowledge of Latin would be a definite asset. The Latin section traditionally meets on Tuesday evenings. Several members expressed a desire to learn the Classical Greek language as well, so we formed a study group that which on Thursdays. With the introduction of the new four-course sequence of Classical Greek offered at UAH, the Greek section will change to become similar to its Latin twin, fostering a study of Greek outside the classroom. Both groups meet in Roberts Hall Room 406. In addition to our regular meetings, which always include cookies and coffee, the Society hosts an annual Christmas party, public readings, as well as picnics on the river. We also bring distinguished Classical scholars to Huntsville to give public lectures and to present the address at our Spring Banquet--a semiformal celebration of ancient cultures. If you have any interest or questions, please do not hesitate to call our advisor, Dr. Richard Gerberding at 824-6310.

Student Alabama Education Association (SAEA)

The Student Alabama Education Association is an organization designed to help Education majors prepare for a career in education. The SAEA is the student chapter of the Alabama Education Association. This organization is open to both Elementary and Secondary Education majors and those who have not yet declared their majors but are thinking of majoring in Education. The SAEA provides opportunities for professional growth. The organization holds several meetings throughout the year which focus on specific educational topics. These topics range from implementing literature-based programs in the classroom to investigating what is required in an actual job interview. Guest speakers are brought in specifically to provide expertise in many areas of education. For example, several area principals are brought in to conduct a forum on interviewing. In addition the SAEA participates in the state SAEA conventions that occur twice during the school year. These conventions feature guest speakers who provide continual opportunities for professional growth.

As members of the SAEA, students receive newspapers and magazines throughout the year from the National Education Association (NEA) as well as from the Alabama Education Association (AEA). As a community service project, the UAH SAEA is involved in a children's literature program designed for students in University Place Elementary School. The program is called "Story Safari." "Story Safari" is a series of bookpacks which are donated by the SAEA to one classroom at University Place Elementary School. For those who are unfamiliar with bookpacks, they include a piece of children's literature and a simple hands-on activity which relates to the literature. Students take these bookpacks home where they read the story and complete the activity. This provides students with opportunities to experience children's literature and to involve their families in their learning process. This program is designed to create a love of reading in students that will last a lifetime. Members of the SAEA combine children's literature with corresponding activities and are responsible for replenishing the activity supplies.

The UAH SAEA also sponsors a "Student of the Month" program. Each month one student in the Education Department is rewarded for his/her outstanding efforts and participation in his/her classes. Student teachers are also eligible for this award. Professors within the Education Department choose the "Student of the Month."
