Sociology investigates social forces that shape human behavior within the context of groups, organizations, and cultures. The subject matter of sociology ranges from intimate social interactions within families to formal interactions within large organizations; from deviant behavior to influence of norms and laws; from work to leisure; and from forces that maintain order to forces that generate change in society.
In addition to learning about the social world, the study of sociology equips you with a variety of general skills, including research and computer techniques, which are applicable to many careers. By studying sociology one learns to understand complex data collection techniques and measures of social trends. This means that a major in sociology at UAH is a strong foundation for the pursuit of many careers in business, government, and education. The Department of Sociology at UAH offers the B.A. degree with a major in sociology, a minor in sociology, and sociology as a second area of study or cognate.
