The acquisition of a second language, and through it an understanding of another country's literature and culture, is a rich academic experience for students interested in the liberal arts or in a career in today's world of global markets, increasing political interdependence, and international scientific collaborations. The programs in the Department of Foreign Language and Literature are designed to teach the effective use of foreign languages, literatures, and cultures, both oral and written, in various areas of academic and professional life.
UAH has combined five previously separate programs administered by the department into one. All students will now graduate with a B.A. in Foreign Languages with a particular focus language (French, German, Russian or Spanish), and if appropriate, a concentration in Foreign Language & International Trade. This foreign language major may be combined with the study of a second foreign language, international business, international studies, teacher certification, or a number of other majors, minors and cognates. Consequently, all foreign language majors will share a common curriculum and experience. The program also offers classes in Japanese and Latin.
