Art History

An Art History minor complements many other majors in the College of Liberal Arts, and is strongly recommended for Art Studio majors focusing on sculpture, painting/drawing, or printmaking. Twenty-one semester hours within the department are required; 15 hours when ARH 100 and 101 are applied to the fine arts GER.

Art Studio

A minor in Art Studio can focus on any of the studio disciplines available to Art Studio majors. Art Studio can also serve as a second area of study for Elementary Education majors. Both require 21 semester hours within the department.

Classical Studies

Classical Studies is a program designed to impart an academic familiarity with the languages, history, and culture of ancient Mediterranean society.

Communication Arts

A minor in communications works well for:

Computer-Mediated Communication (web cognate)

This program focuses on web development, design, and management. The number of courses required is quite large at 40 semester hours; however, students majoring in communication arts, art studio, and MIS are particularly well positioned to complete cognate courses in their major degree field, with only 21-24 hours (the same as most other minors) of cognate course generally required outside the major.

English

The department offers courses in:

Students can expect to develop skills in literary research and analysis; acquire knowledge about various authors, genres, and periods; and improve their capacity to write with grace and precision. The Cognate Studies program in technical writing offers courses with a direct vocational application.

Foreign Language

Students may choose to minor in one of these areas:
(Foreign Language majors may choose to minor in another language; also, this minor can also be used as second area of study for elementary education majors.)

Global Studies

The Global Studies Cognate is a new program at UAH aimed at students interested in pursuing in-depth study of the world outside the United States. Taking the place of a traditional minor, the cognate allows students to choose course work from many different academic disciplines at the university.

History

A student minoring in history will need to take 21 semester hours above HY 101-102 and take at least 12 semester hours at the 300 level or higher. This minor can be used as second area of study for education majors.

Music

Generally 23-24 semester hours is required for a music minor with 11 hours of it in upper-level studies. A music technology minor is supportive to computer science, computer engineering, and electrical engineering majors. This minor can also be used as second area of study for elementary education majors.


Philosophy

Students minoring in philosophy are required to complete 21 semester hours including PHL 201 and 202.

Political Science

Students choosing to minor in political science must complete 21 semester hours including PSC 101, 102, 484. This minor can also be used as second area of study for elementary education majors.

Psychology

Students choosing to minor in psychology must complete 21 semester hours of which 12 hours must be at the 300 level or above. This minor can also be used as second area of study for elementary education majors.

Sociology

Students choosing to minor in sociology must complete 21 semester hours, including SOC 100, of which 12 hours must be at the 300 level or above. This minor can also be used as second area of study for elementary education majors.

Technical Writing Cognate

This cognate prepares students for a career of technical writing. It provides intensive training in writing with practical experience and fundamental technical skills.
