Awards & Publications

Drs. Andrew Dunar and Stephen Waring have been awarded the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics 2001 History Manuscript Award for Power to Explore: A History of Marshall Space Flight Center. This work analyzes 30 years of history at MSFC from its origins as an Army center presided over by Wernher von Braun to a center for excellence in space transportation systems and microgravity research. Dr. Roger Launius, NASA Chief Historian, considers Dunar and Waring's discussion of the Challenger accident to be among the best ever published. Dr. Waring attended the conference on January 9, 2001 and accepted the award on behalf of himself and Dr. Dunar. Dr. Waring also presented a paper entitled “Did Cold Weather Cause the Challenger Accident?” at the conference.

Dr. Sheri Shuck was awarded a UAH mini-grant for $4967. The title of her mini grant is ”The Alabama and Coushatta Indians: A Tribal History.” This grant was renewed in 2002, and she used it to do research at the Public Records Office in London. She also won a grant to conduct research at the Center for Southwestern Studies at Southern Methodist University.

Dr. Virginia Martin  published her book entitled Law and Custom in the Steppe: The Kazacks of the Middle Horde and Russian Colonialism in the Nineteenth Century. It was published by Curzon Press, Richmond, Surrey, UK. She also became editor of the Journal of the Central Eurasian Studies Society.

Dr. Andrew Dunar serves as editor of the Journal of Oral History Association. Phillip Boucher published "The 'Frontier Era' of the French Caribbean, 1620s-1690s" in Negotiated Empires: Centers and Peripheries in the Americas, 1500-1820. Routledge, 2002.

Dr. Lee Williams has been awarded a sabbatical for the academic year, 2002-2003.

Drs. Williams and Jack Ellis won an award for their work on the Alabama Civil Rights lecture series in the fall of 2001.

Dr. Waring won a research grant from NASA to continue his work on the Challenger accident.
