Bolshinskiy came to the CMSA with sixteen years of theoretical and experimental research experience in mechanical, heat transfer and mass transfer processes in both terrestrial and microgravity environments. During the period 1976 – 1992, as a lead research physicist, he conducted research that supported development of the cryogenic propellant storage and acquisition systems for the Soviet space shuttle “Buran” and the heavy launch vehicle “Energia”. During this period he also directed the engineering design and construction of a number of liquid helium cryostats, which were intended to house super-conducting magnetic systems that were subsequently used for investigations in chemistry and physics. He received his Ph.D. in physical and mathematical sciences in 1986 for research on Nonlinear Surface Electromagnetic Waves in Inhomogeneous Structures. He has published 15 research articles in refereed journals and is co-author of 8 patents based on his research. In addition he has wide experience of programming in support of engineering activities, covering research, design, and implementation phases.
