A Faculty Guide to Ethical and Legal Standards in Student Recruiting
Employers may contact you to request the "best and
brightest" of your students for job opportunities. This
may seem innocent, but there are some potential legal and
ethical ramifications. If you receive a request from an
employer and choose only to refer a few students without
informing all students who may be qualified, you are not
maintaining "a fair and equitable recruiting process." Also,
if you identify students for employment on a "regular" basis,
you could find yourself considered an " employment agency" for
the purposes of complying with laws related to equal employment
opportunities. For example, you could find yourself open
to charges of discrimination if it appears that you are only
referring male students or only minority students.
A Faculty Guide to Ethical and Legal Standards in Student
Hiring has been developed by the National Association of
Colleges and Employers (NACE) to assist you in fairly and
ethically providing employment assistance to your students.
