Project Background
In 1990 UAH made the decision to move from the era of Unisys 2200 legacy system and
into a new age of technology. That move placed UAH on the existing SCT IA-PLUS systems of Financial Records; Human Resources; and Student Information. Each of the existing systems have their own database requiring that the system be shut down each night to run data reconciliation programs to post all the changes from the previous day. This required shut down results in the student and faculty web systems being taken off line, thereby limiting the hours of service we can provide our customers. The present IA PLUS system provides access through outdated terminal emulation screens requiring the user to learn a system of screen numbers to navigate the system.

The proposed SCT Banner system uses one database, thereby eliminating the need for
nightly shut down to bring the system into balance, and allowing the web services to
active 24X7. In addition, this new system interfaces with the user through browser
technology, thus allowing any personal computer, including Apple, to access the system with a fairly current browser version. The addition on web for housing and employees will improve the university’s service to the students and staff. All in all the new SCT Banner system will bring into the leading edge of user interface and university function.

UAH selected SCT Banner following a nine month evaluation of Oracle and SCT
systems. This evaluation of systems was requested by the Board of Trustees and made in conjunction with the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. As a result of the evaluation, UAH and UA will convert to the entire SCT Banner system, and UAB will use only the SCT Student system.
