Karma Cottman, will be the keynote speaker for the domestic violence workshop hosted on the UAH campus, April 18.

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) will host a first-responder workshop "Responding to Domestic Violence: Creating Pathways for Change and Recovery," on Monday, April 18. The seminar is sponsored by the UAH Office of Diversity, Women's and Gender Studies Program and AshaKiran.

The workshop will be held in the Conference Training Center (formerly the University Center Exhibit Hall) and begins with registration at 7:30 a.m., and ends at 4 p.m. Delois H. Smith, UAH Vice President of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, will be one of the workshop presenters.

Keynote speaker for the event is Karma Cottman, Executive Director of the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence in Washington, DC. The organization works to respond effectively to the needs of domestic violence survivors and their children and to strengthen city-wide domestic violence prevention and intervention efforts. Cottman has worked with national policy partners to strengthen federal legislation to effectively respond to the needs of all domestic violence survivors. Additionally, Cottman serves on the steering committee of the Institute of Domestic Violence in the African Community and the Policy Partnership for Communities of Color.

  • Gretta Gardner — Policy Director of the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Gardner serves as legal advisor for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

  • Jessica Zimmerman — Trauma Therapist, Crisis Services of North Alabama
  • Condencia Brade — Executive Director, National Organization of Sisters of Color Ending Sexual Assault
  • Rashmi Chauhan — Counselor, Wellstone Behavioral Health Center
  • Chief Larry Muncey — Madison Police Department
  • Chief Mark McMurray — Huntsville Police Department
  • Liana Hill — Forensic Nurse Examiner, Crisis Services of North Alabama
