UAH Department of Philosophy welcomes Distinguished Speaker Dr. Kristie L. Dotson

Feminist philosopher Dr. Kristie L. Dotson will be the guest speaker for Department of Philosophy Distinguished Speakers Series on Friday, Feb. 19.

Noted African American feminist philosopher Kristie L. Dotson will be the guest speaker for UAH's Distinguished Speakers Series on Friday, Feb. 19.

Dotson will give the public lecture "The Philosophy of Race," at 7 p.m., in Morton Hall room 200. Her expertise is focused in the fields of epistemology and black feminism. Dotson's visit is sponsored by the UAH Department of Philosophy and the Humanities Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Kristie L. Dotson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Michigan State University. Her academic work includes research of epistemology and women of color feminism, particularly Black feminist thought, and critical philosophies of race. Additionally, she also conducts academic work in diversity, and metaphilosophy (the philosophical study of philosophy).

Dotson has given talks on her work at numerous conferences, organizations and universities including Yale, Penn State, California State and Fullerton. She has been involved with many research projects over the years including two high-profile research projects, Voice of the Unheard: Identifying a Girl of Color School to Prison Pipeline with Kimberly Crenshaw in collaboration with the African American Legal Policy Center and Creating and Teaching a Unified Epistemology Across the Sciences and Humanities with the Interdisciplinary Team Building Initiative.

She edited a special issue on women of color feminist philosophy for Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy entitled,Interstices: Inheriting Women of Color Feminist Philosophy and has published in numerous journals including Comparative Philosophy, T he Black Scholar, Transactions of the Charles S. Pierce Society and Social Epistemology. Dotson is currently working on a monograph entitled, How to Do Things With Knowledge.

Dotson earned a Master of Arts degree and PhD in Philosophy from The University of Memphis, as well as a Master of Arts degree in Literature from The University of Illinois at Chicago, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in African American Studies, Business Administration and English Literature from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA.
