Majors

Students majoring in Foreign Languages or in Foreign Language and International Trade (FLIT) can choose from four areas of concentration: French, German, Russian, or Spanish. Students may also minor in one of these four areas regardless of major. 

French

Coursework for this concentration focuses on improving French language skills and developing an expertise in various aspects of French culture, including literature, business, and popular culture. Students who select French as their foreign language concentration are required to complete a French-language internship, either domestically or abroad. 

Le Cercle Français is the university’s French-language student organization.

German

Coursework for this concentration focuses on improving German language skills and developing an expertise in various aspects of German culture, including literature, business, and popular culture. Students who select German as their foreign language concentration are required to complete a German-language internship, either domestically or abroad. They may also receive credit for language courses taken at the Institute for Intercultural Communication in Düsseldorf, Germany, with whom UAH has a partnership.

The German club is the university’s German-language student organization.

Russian

Coursework for this concentration  focuses on improving Russian language skills and developing an expertise in various aspects of Russian culture, including literature, business, and popular culture. Students who select Russian as their foreign language concentration are required to complete a Russian-language internship, either domestically or abroad. 

The Slovo-Slavic Club is the university’s Russian-language student organization. 

For students beginning Russian for the first time, please note that first-semester Russian is only offered in the fall.

Foreign Languages and International Trade (FLIT)

FLIT is an interdisciplinary major that combines foreign language instruction in French, German, Russian, or Spanish with coursework related to international trade. Classes include macroeconomics, accounting, statistics, finance, marketing, management, and international relations. The program is designed to prepare students for a wide range of professional careers in governmental and corporate organizations both domestically and abroad. No minor is required for this program, although many choose to add either a global studies minor or an international business minor.
