Professor, Theory / Composition


Dr. Ron Wray is Professor of Music at the University of Alabama in Huntsville where he teaches clarinet and music theory. Dr. Wray has been active as a teacher and performer in higher education since 1992 and in recent years has also focused on composition. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Clarinet Performance from Louisiana State University where he studied with Paul Dirksmeyer and Richard Pickar of the Houston Symphony. He holds a Master of Music degree in clarinet performance and a Bachelor of Music Education from the same institution.

Dr. Wray has taught at the University of Alabama in Huntsville since 2001. Prior to his tenure at UAH, he taught at Dickinson State University in Dickinson, North Dakota for six years and at Southern Arkansas University for three years. Dr. Wray has also served as a teacher in the public schools of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Glenwood, Arkansas. For ten years during the summer, Dr. Wray also served as Teacher/Artist-in-Residence at the International Music Camp in the International Peace Gardens on the Canadian border.

As a clarinetist, Dr. Wray has performed throughout states in the upper mid-west and across the south. He has performed in numerous solo faculty recitals, in dozens of chamber ensembles, with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, Huntsville Community Chorus productions, Opera South, and the Huntsville Chamber Winds. He has concertized as a soloist and chamber musician in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Canada.

As a composer, Dr. Wray's works have been performed at the 2010 Society of Composers National Conference, the Sam Houston State University New Music Festival, the UAH New Music Festival, Southeastern Composers League conferences, Birmingham Art and Music Alliance performances, and the Iowa Composers Forum. His works have also been performed in a New York Vox Novus performance, have been heard on Appalachia Free Radio, and the 2010 UAH Zones Symposium. Dr. Wray's three-movement work, "An Easterly Wind," for bass clarinet and piano received mention in The Clarinet, the scholarly journal of the International Clarinet Association in 2012. His chamber works are published by JB Linear Music.

Dr. Wray has taught all upper level theory courses at UAH. His teaching responsibilities at DSU and SAU included music theory, music history, and chamber ensembles. Dr. Wray also served as Associate Director of Bands while at SAU. In 2009, Dr. Wray was awarded a Distinguished Teaching Award from UAH. He was awarded an Outstanding Teaching Award from Dickinson State University in 2001.

Dr. Wray's service to the institutions with which he has been affiliated has been extensive. He served on the faculty senate at Dickinson State University for four years including serving as Faculty Senate Secretary for two years and as President of the Faculty Senate, 2000-2001. He has also served on the senate for UAH. He served on the UAH Peer and Aspirant Committee in 2011 and has served as a Preliminary Action Officer, a Hearing Panel member, a Proponent, and Chair of a hearing panel for the UAH University Judicial Board. He has served as chair for numerous re-appointment committees, has served on two NASM music accreditation committees (DSU and UAH), has served as a visiting team member for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, as Library Liaison at UAH, and on numerous departmental committees including those of juries and scholarship. While at DSU, he served as State Chair for the Common Course Numbering Committee for four-year schools, on the North Dakota Grant Review Board for the Arts, All-State adjudicator, Friends of the Library, Chair of the Community Concerts Association in Dickinson, North Dakota, and for six years organized the annual Northern Plains Music Festival which served high school students from North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Manitoba. In service to recruitment for the UAH Music Department, he has conducted numerous clarinet master classes, performed at dozens of community events, and taught private lessons for numerous high school and middle school students.
