There are two courses in the composition sequence. EH 101 (or 101S with 101L Writing Studio, based on placement) and EH 102. In EH 101, students read a variety of texts collected in Everything's an Argument and then describe, respond to, and argue about the genres and topics it comprises. Both the texts they read and the essays they write in the course are intended to offer students practice in exploring and understanding the complex ways that arguments can be effectively constructed in their writing. In EH 102, the second course in the sequence, the readings extend into the research sections of Everything's an Argument and include readings about a topic chosen by the course's instructor. That topic then serves as a springboard for the students to engage in their own research on a more narrow version of the course readings. Both the texts they read and the essays they write in the course are intended to offer students practice in conducting research – from asking research questions to reporting their results.
