Sick Leave

Sick leave is granted for protection in time of illness or incapacitation because of injury. Sick leave is a privilege and must be requested by the employee and approved by the supervisor in each instance. Evidence of illness from a physician may be required by the supervisor before sick leave is authorized. Throughout the period of absence, employees must keep the supervisor informed of their physical condition and their estimated date of return. Employees who do not comply with these provisions may have their absence charged to leave without pay or have other disciplinary action taken against them. The University realizes the importance of preventive health care and the fact that most regular scheduled visits to the dentist, physician, or optometrist occur within normal working hours. Accordingly, sick leave may be taken for these purposes. Employees are expected to inform their supervisors well in advance of such scheduled visits and may be required to provide documentation of the appointment.

  • Regular full-time staff employees and 12 month faculty earn 9 days sick leave per year. Nine days are accrued during the year on a bi-weekly basis at the rate of 2.76 hours per pay period.
  • Eligible employees who are employed for 7 or more calendar days in any bi-weekly pay period accrue sick leave for that period.
  • Sick leave may be taken in 15 minute increments.
  • There is no maximum limit on the amount of sick leave that can be accumulated.
  • Upon termination there is no cash payment for unused sick leave.
  • Upon retirement a maximum of 12 days of unused sick leave for each year of service may be applied to credited service with the Teachers' Retirement System.
  • Holidays occurring during a paid sick leave are paid as holidays and not charged to sick leave. Paid sick leave will be considered as time worked for the purpose of overtime computation.
