Pinus strobus 'Pendula' - Weeping White Pine

Family - Pinaceae

Size - Size is variable as it must be trained in youth to develop a leader. Generally seen in the range of 14 to 16 feet with long branches that sweep to the ground. Growth rate is about 1 to 1 1/2 feet per year.

Foliage - Bluish green needles in bundles of 5. Very soft needles.

Flower/Fruit/Seed - Cones, 6-8 inches in length.

Bark - Smooth, gray on young trees becoming darker with age.

Pests and Diseases - None noticed, however White Pine Blister Rust and White Pine Weevil can be serious.

Landscape Use - Excellent for specimen use. Very beautiful weeping form, fine textured. Is very attractive in the winter landscape after a snowfall. Very handsome ornamental.

Performance - 9 Adaptable, can grow in dry to fairly wet soils. Easily transplanted. Rated zones 3 -8 but in this area of the south and lower I would give it afternoon protection if possible. It seems that it has some problems with heat and drought stress and when this is compounded will open it up to other problems. The tree in the above photo receives morning sun/afternoon shade and has done excellent since day one.
