Pinus densiflora 'Umbraculifera' - Tanyosho, Tabletop Pine, Umbrella Pine

Family - Pinaceae

Size - Very slow growing to 12, maybe 15 feet in height with a spread greater than height. Umbrella like in form being somewhat flat topped hence the name Umbrella Pine or Tabletop Pine. The Tanyosho Pine in this picture was planted in the Spring of 98 at about 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall. It should begin to be a beautiful specimen in about 30 or 40 more years.

Foliage - 2 needled evergreen, needles 8" to as much as 20" in length, slightly twisted, bright green, serrated margins.

Flower/Fruit/Seed - Cones, approximately 2" long, 1" wide, sub-terminal. Heavy bearer.

Bark - Develops a beautiful orange to orangish-red toned bark which peels off in thin scales.

Pests and Diseases - None noticed. This plant is located very close to the edge of our lake, and considering the number of times that this lake has overflowed due to heavy rain, it is safe to say that the Tanyosho can endure periods of being submerged.

Landscape Use - Specimen use, conifer garden; A beautiful plant and well worth seeing if one can get the opportunity to view a mature one.

Performance - 8 The 2 needled pines in general are tolerant of very adverse conditions to begin with. As of 2003, there have been no problems.
