UAH’s campus hosts the Rise School of Huntsville, a non-profit organization providing early childhood education services to children with developmental disabilities and children without disabilities. UAH maintains strong relationships with local federal and industry employers and research partners, including NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, the U.S. Department of Defense, the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, and NOAA/National Weather Service UAH’s College of Nursing maintains contracts with 800 area providers, and a majority of its nursing students go on to work in the Tennessee Valley after graduation. UAH serves as the anchor tenant for Cummings Research Park, the second largest research park in the nation and home to 285 companies and more than 25,000 employees. UAH’s cooperative relationship with the Water Center for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean research has led to an ongoing study abroad program focusing on climate change and sustainable development in Panama. UAH’s Public History Program works with area student groups and civic organizations to encourage public awareness of local history and resources. UAH’s College of Business Administration hosts an annual “Experience Entrepreneurship!” summer camp for high school students to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset and stimulate interest in launching new businesses and organizations. UAH is a longtime host of the North Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair, a competition for junior high school (grades 5-8, junior division) and high school (grades 9-12, senior division) students from public and private schools across ten counties. UAH’s Department of Art and Art History sponsors the Archaeological Institute of America North Alabama Chapter. UAH’s College of Business Administration’s Entrepreneurship Club sponsors the annual E-Launch 48-hour business plan competition, in which students are mentored and ultimately judged by a panel of community entrepreneurs. UAH is host and co-sponsor of the American Astronautical Society’s Wernher von Braun Memorial Symposium, in conjunction with the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the Huntsville National Space Club. UAH students have participated in the nationwide “Hour of Code” campaign, created to promote computer science in classroom, since its inception. UAH’s College of Business Administration hosts the Huntsville Open Tech Coffee (HOTCoffee), an open, bi-weekly forum designed to activate more entrepreneurial activity in the community. UAH’s College of Business Administration’s ICE - Innovation, Commercialization, and Entrepreneurship - Lab works with area entrepreneurs and inventors to involve students in exploring new business opportunities, commercializing inventors, and designing new organizations. UAH is a longtime host of the Madison County Drinking Water Festival, which teaches area fourth graders the importance of protecting water resources through fun, enlightening, hands-on activities. UAH, with the Student Chapter of The American Meteorological Society, sponsors the annual Rocket City WeatherFest, a community outreach event covering severe weather preparedness. UAH is the home of the Science in Motion van for Chemistry and Physics, providing professional development for teachers in 10 districts within the counties of Madison, Marshall, Jackson, and DeKalb. UAH’s College of Science partners with the HudsonAlpha Institute of Biotechnology to visit area high schools and conduct AP Biology labs. UAH’s Education Department has long-standing partnerships with all local school districts. UAH has long hosted the North Alabama Science Olympiad, in which high school and middle school students from across the region tackle more than two-dozen thought-provoking challenges using principles of science. UAH’s College of Liberal Arts hosts a Speakers Bureau, which provides scholarly talks by faculty for area civic groups and public schools. UAH’s Office of International Engagement maintains a cooperative agreement with the University of Rostock in Germany to facilitate educational and cultural exchange at the student and faculty levels. UAH’s College of Nursing hosts CHEERS, the Coalition for Health Enhancement of Elders and Referral Services, which provides provide education, needed services, and referrals for homebound elderly clients in rural, isolated areas. UAH hosts the regional “Poetry Out Loud” championship, a national poetry recitation contest for high school students, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. UAH’s College of Nursing hosts “Let’s Pretend Hospital,” a program designed to help local first graders reduce the fear and anxiety they may experience if they must be hospitalized or visit the emergency room. UAH’s College of Business Administration has agreements with Hohai University and Tsinghua University, which brings students from China to UAH to complete a degree. UAH’s College of Business Administration hosts a collaborative study abroad program with the Romanian-American University, enabling UAH to study in Romania alongside Romanian students. UAH’s Space Hardware Club engages local eighth graders through their Amateur Radio on the International Space Station program, which allows the students to uplink to and speak with astronauts on the ISS using amateur radio. UAH’s College of Engineering hosts an annual Engineering Summer Camp to expose rising tenth and eleventh graders to a variety of engineering disciplines through hands-on and challenging activities. UAH’s Music Department and its Theatre Program partner with community organizations, including The Arts Council Inc., to promote the arts and present low- or no-cost performances at public venues. UAH’s College of Business Administration’s iSystems Club provides pro bono website development and design services to local non-profit organizations through their iGiveBack program. UAH’s Small Business Development Center and the Procurement Technical Assistance Center provides counseling, training, and services to small businesses in the community.
