Alabama’s Controversial Immigration Law
What Does House Bill 56 Mean for Alabama Women and Families?
As an organization committed to breaking through barriers for women and girls for the last 130 years, AAUW Huntsville Branch takes a look at the impact of House Bill (HB) 56 from personal and economic perspectives.
Since passing the Alabama legislature in June 2011, Alabama’s new immigration law has attracted national attention as the toughest immigration law in the country. It has also led to costly unintended consequences for businesses; citizens; state agencies that issue driver’s licenses, license plates, and manufactured home registration permits; and for public schools, who are required to E-Verify work eligibility of employees of all of their vendors. The law incriminates not only helpful citizens but those who unknowingly support any segment of an illegal immigrant’s life.
We have invited a panel of speakers knowledgeable about the law and its effects on women and families. Aylene Sepulveda, a community activist, is a U.S. citizen whose husband is an undocumented immigrant. Dr. Sandra Mendiola, Assistant Professor of History at UAHuntsville, is a Mexican citizen and a U.S. permanent resident (i.e., a “documented” immigrant). Rosa Toussaint-Ortiz, President and CEO of Bilingual Consulting, Educational & Paralegal Services in Huntsville, was an officer in the U.S. Army and has held positions with several government agencies. June Wang is an immigration lawyer who practices in Huntsville. Our moderator is attorney Kimberly Brown (an AAUW member), and immigration officers from local universities have been invited to attend.
Dinner reservations ($16) are due by noon, Sunday, February 5. Email Lois Guendel at herb.guendel@knology.net or call 256-880-8643. The event will be held in the Covenant Presbyterian Fellowship Hall, 301 Drake Ave SE, Huntsville, AL.
