POSITION AVAILABLE
The Office of Counsel at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa has an opening for an attorney with experience in litigation and negotiating, drafting and reviewing documents and closing a variety of legal transactions. It is preferred that applicants have at least five years of legal experience.
Office of Counsel attorneys advise University academic and administrative officials, prepare and review legal documents, defend claims before federal and state agencies and courts, and render various other legal services. Relevant areas of practice include labor and employment law matters, human resource and personnel issues, purchasing and contracts, immigration, regulatory compliance matters, records privacy, bidding and contracting for construction, negotiating and reviewing software licenses, real estate transactions, gift agreements, private and governmental grant awards, and licensing and other intellectual property transactions.
The position requires a license to practice law in Alabama, and any applicant not so licensed must be eligible to take and pass the Alabama bar examination within a year of appointment. A strong academic record as an undergraduate and law student is required, as well as demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications; legal research, analysis, and problem-solving skills; and ethical and professional conduct. The attorney must be able to interact cooperatively with other university lawyers, administrators, and constituencies, and must have the ability to work collegially with diverse personnel. The applicant’s experience must demonstrate success in effectively serving a broad, diverse, and demanding clientele and in working well with other attorneys and professional staff and others in a legal office.
