Constitution
of the
Student Sociological Association

Article I:  Name

The name of our organization shall be the Student Sociological Association.

 

Article II:  Mission Statement

The Student Sociological Association is a student-run, democratic organization whose purpose is to promote the study of Sociology and to sponsor social and intellectual activities that will serve to enrich its member’s study of Sociology, aid students of Sociology in their preparation for careers after graduation, and contribute toward the improvement of our community as well as the human condition.

 

Article III:  Membership

Club membership shall be open to any student of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. 

Qualifications for “active membership” shall be as follows:

(1)      Attendance of at least two general meetings

(2)      After attending two general meetings, the student will be considered an active member if he or she retains a meeting attendance record of 50%.

 

Article IV:  Officers


Officers shall be four in number:  President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

The duties of each officer of the Student Sociological Association shall be as follows:

(1)      The President shall provide general leadership, act as chair of all club meetings, and publicly represent the organization as needed.

(2)      The Vice-President shall assist in leadership, assist in the chairing of all club meetings, and publicly represent the club as needed.  Should the president be temporarily unable to fulfill his or her duties, the Vice-President shall assume the duties of President during his or her absence.

(3)      The Secretary shall be the archivist for the organization and perform such duties as agreed upon by the officers.

(4)      The Treasurer shall receive, disburse, invest, and otherwise properly manage and record all financial transactions for this organization.

As necessary, and when unanimously agreed upon by the officers, the above listed duties of each office may be altered to better serve the needs of this organization.

To qualify for nomination to an office, the nominee must be a student of the University of Alabama in Huntsville and an active member of the Student Sociological Association.

Candidates for the above offices shall be nominated by active members of the organization no later than the second-to-the-last meeting of each academic year.  Elections shall be held during the last meeting of each academic year.

The term of office for all officers will be one academic year and shall commence at the first meeting of the academic year for which they are elected

In the event that any officer is unable to complete his or her term in office, a replacement will be elected at a meeting designated by the officers.

Cause for removal of an officer from his or her post shall consist of such matters as misuse of office or persistent failure to perform his or her duties of office.

As necessity demands, committees shall be established for the organization of club activities.

 

Article V:  Executive Committee

The governing body of this society shall be known as the Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee shall be composed of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the organization.

Official actions and policies of this organization shall be set by a plurality of the members of the Executive Committee, except for proposed constitutional amendments which will require the approval of two-thirds of active members present when said amendment is considered for ratification.

 

Article VI:  Amendments

Amendments to this constitution may be proposed by active members of this organization.  Proposed amendments shall be presented to the executive committee for consideration.

Proposed amendments, if approved by a three-quarters vote of the Executive Committee, will be presented to the organization for ratification.  Ratification of amendments to this constitution shall require approval of two-thirds of the active members present when said amendment is considered at a general meeting of the organization.
