Established in 1990 by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Office of Multicultural Affairs was revitalized and restructured in 1992 to encourage university-wide appreciation of ethnic diversity.

This office seeks to increase the participation of underrepresented minority students in post-secondary educational activities of The University of Alabama in Huntsville through the initiation and monitoring of programs to promote interactive pluralism.

To fulfill these objectives the Office of Multicultural Affairs offers culturally sensitive programs, activities and initiatives to assist the university in providing a welcoming campus atmosphere that is supportive and rewarding as students prepare themselves to become responsible adults with a respect for cultural diversity.

Programs are designed to impact minority as well as majority students in order to promote a sense of community, an acceptance of multiculturalism and racial tolerance on the UAH campus. In like manner, the Office of Multicultural Affairs seeks to improve minority participation on campus through the recommendation and monitoring of comprehensive, institution-wide intercultural practices and programming.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs also attempts to provide access to the university to those who are unfamiliar with academia as well as serve as liaison between the university and the larger community.
