Campus Master Plan 2009

View the complete RFP here.

Priorities

The University is seeking a qualified vendor to develop a Campus Master Plan that captures the spirit and character of campus while addressing the complexities of a growing educational program, traffic circulation, utility distribution, and parking. Since the 1990s UAHuntsville has experienced significant growth in terms of physical facilities, student enrollment, and research. The University is striving to become a more traditional campus, as evidenced by the recent construction of a residence hall, fraternity and sorority housing, fitness center, and food services expansion. This plan will continue in that direction, providing a guide for future campus development during the next five - twenty years. Generally, the plan should commence with the following assumptions:
  • The plan should be based on the educational goals and priorities of the institution.
  • The scale, mass, materials and style of the campus academic core should form the basis for the architecture of the remainder of the campus.
  • Current clustering of facilities within each college should be maintained, with any new facilities connecting visually and geographically in such a way as to make the overall campus operate as a whole.
  • Parking should generally be located at the campus edges. Any significant increases in parking capacity should be obtained through construction of parking garages.
  • The plan should accommodate accessibility by bicycles and various forms of public transportation.

History of Campus Master Plan

The most recent Campus Master Plan was developed in 2004, with the following primary components:
  • Plan components to support the University’s desire to continue its transition to a more student-friendly, pedestrian-oriented campus – giving priority to pedestrian pathways vs. streets and parking, relocating parking to the perimeter of campus, improving proximity and accessibility to usable campus spaces, and improving the pedestrian experience.
  • Create a strong first impression welcoming people as they enter the campus.
  • Define and develop an effective, centralized gathering space.
  • Improve campus life for students, faculty, staff, and community through thoughtful and effective planning, focusing on the components, activities and amenities that will create a more "student friendly" campus.
  • Define areas of "critical mass" that would serve as the heart of UAHuntsville activities.
  • Provide visitor-oriented focal points that would serve as places of interest, encourage gatherings, and define a sense of place.
  • Determine location and positioning of buildings such that they would create and face great spaces.
  • Improve pedestrian circulation including the provision of connections and nodes to serve as effective meeting and gathering spaces.
  • Design guidelines for future development of the campus.
