General Information for Foreign Students, Faculty, and Staff

Foreign students interested in applying to UAH in an F1 or J1 student status should contact the Admissions Office at 256-824-6070.

Non-U.S. Citizens who are prospective faculty or visiting scholars should contact the respective UAH department on campus who will work directly with the International Student and Scholar Office to ensure work authorization and compliance with federal requirements.

Obtaining a Social Security Number

Non-immigrants or immigrants who are authorized to work in the U.S. will need to apply for a Social Security Number in person at the Social Security Administration (SSA) Office located at 5021 Bradford Dr., Huntsville, Alabama. Please call 256-837-7010 for hours of operation and directions.

A letter verifying visa status will need to be obtained from UAH before visiting the SSA Office. Presently, the SSA Officers are required to verify citizenship and visa status of all applicants prior to the issuance of a Social Security Number. This process normally takes around 10 calendar days. If verification does not occur within 10 days, the SSA is required to submit a request for verification by mail to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A number cannot be issued until this verification is received from USCIS.

Obtaining an Alabama Driver's License

State law requires all operators of motor vehicles to obtain an Alabama Driver’s License. All nonimmigrants who are eligible and wish to drive in the state must abide by this law. An International Driver’s License is usually valid for 30 days only in the U.S. after which time the Alabama license must be obtained to drive legally.

The Alabama Department of Public Safety, Driver’s License Office requires a Social Security Number (SSN) before a license can be applied for. This office is located at 1115 Church Street in Huntsville, Alabama. Please call 256-539-0681 for hours of operation and directions.
If a *non-us citizen has applied for a SSN and is not eligible to work, proof of denial by the SSA must be obtained to apply for the license. Proof of visa status will also need to be presented. The closest office where these licenses are issued is in Decatur, Alabama located on the first floor of the Courthouse at 302 Lee St. N.E. *B1/B2 AND F-2 VISA HOLDERS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO APPLY FOR AN ALABAMA DRIVER’S LICENSE.
