Admission to UAH
Obtaining admission to The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is a process that takes a considerable amount of time and planning. International applicants should begin the admission process at a minimum of 4-6 months prior to the intended enrollment date. UAH is a public university that offers a variety of academic options for study. We offer admission at three different levels; undergraduate (bachelors degree) or graduate (master’s and doctorate degrees) or the Intensive English Program (non-degree). We also offer a limited number of certificates at the master’s degree level that an international student may be eligible to pursue along with a full-time degree program. As a public university, we are founded and subsidized by the Alabama state government to provide low-cost education to residents of the state of Alabama. Public institutions offer a resident rate and out of state/non-resident tuition rate that is double the resident rate. Despite this, UAH tuition rates are still much lower than the average private institution tuition. Current tuition rates can be found on the Student Accounts/Bursar website .

Intensive English Program
The IEP is a competitive program whose primary focus is assisting students in developing the language ability necessary for full access to information in an English-medium university such as UAH. With a rigorous curriculum and strict attendance requirements, the program is designed to provide all the information a student will need to progress rapidly in his/her acquisition of English for use in an academic setting.

The IEP includes 20-25 hours of classroom instruction per week and is designed for students who need to achieve language levels for admission to a U.S. university degree program. The program offers classes designed to improve student ability to function in both oral and written academic English. The program is academic in theme and follows principles of communicative language teaching. Students focus on improvement in the four component skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Additional work in pragmatics, grammar and pronunciation insures progress in both accuracy and fluency, with special attention paid to interaction in a U.S. university context.

Undergraduate Admissions
The bachelor's is an undergraduate degree that typically takes four years to complete, though some students take slightly less time to finish, and others may take longer. One of the most attractive features of the bachelor's degree program in the United States is that it is highly flexible. You can usually choose from a wide variety of courses and create your own unique program of study. The degree is awarded after you complete a specified number of credits. The first year is called the freshman year; the second is called sophomore; the third, junior; and the fourth, senior.

Students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree at UAH should look at the wide variety of degree programs offered which are listed on the UAH website http://www.uah.edu/main/colleges/colleges.php and refer to the undergraduate admissions website, specifically the international admissions section, to better understand the undergraduate admission requirements and process.

Graduate Admissions
UAH offers master's degrees and doctoral degrees. Both of these academic degrees involve a combination of research and coursework. Graduate education differs from undergraduate education in that study and learning are more self-directed at the graduate level than at the undergraduate level.Graduate study offers a greater depth of training, with increased specialization and intensity of instruction. The master's degree is designed to provide additional education or training in the student's specialized branch of knowledge, well beyond the level of baccalaureate study. The doctoral degree is designed to train research scholars and, in many cases, future college and university faculty members. Receipt of a doctoral degree certifies that the student has demonstrated capacity as a trained research scholar in a specific discipline. Graduate level study requires that a student is well-prepared in the basic elements of their field of study.
