Sororities

Alpha Kappa Alpha
In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became America's first Greek-letter organization established by Black college women. Her roots date back to Howard University, Washington, D.C., where the idea for formation was conceived by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri. She viewed the Sorority as an instrument for enriching the social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing mental stimulation through interaction with friends and associates. Through the years, however, Alpha Kappa Alpha's function has become more complex. After her incorporation as a perpetual body in 1913, Alpha Kappa Alpha gradually branched out and became the channel through which selected college-trained women improved the socioeconomic conditions in their city, state, nation, and the world.

Delta Sigma Theta
Delta Sigma Theta was founded on January 13, 1913 at Howard University in Washington D.C. by twenty-two young visionary African-American women that pledge to serious endeavors and community service. These women demonstrated a vital concern for social welfare, academic excellence and cultural enrichment, de-emphasizing the social side of the sorority life. Those 22 founders started a rich tradition of promoting personal excellence and social progress that continues today. Their ideas of scholarship and service have withstood the test of time, and today Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. comprises over 200,000 members, dedicated to serving mankind. The record of incorporation in 1930 is filed in the Congressional Library in Washington, D.C. Today, there are over 850 chapters located in the United States, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti, Liberia, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea.

Our national philanthropy is the deaf and hearing impaired. Locally our support comes through us hosting an annual Easter egg hunt for a class of hearing impaired children at Jones Valley Elementary School in Huntsville. We also co-sponsor an arts and crafts show with our Huntsville Alumnae Chapter each fall. All proceeds go back into the community with a large portion going to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Huntsville Hospital. Internationally, we support Gallaudet University for the Deaf in Washington, D.C. (The only college dedicated to the deaf and hearing impaired).

Our chapter at UAH strives to be involved in every aspect of college life. We are involved in campus clubs such as SGA, ACE, and Lancers. Our members are also active in church and community activities. Also, most of our members maintain at least a part-time job while attending college.

We have it all!!!! Delta Zeta's sisterhood is strong and our friendships last a lifetime. It's great to be a Delta Zeta !!!!

Panhellenic Council
The University of Alabama in Huntsville prides itself on their five national sororities -- Alpha Kappa Alpha, Chi Omega, Delta Sigma Theta, Delta Zeta, and Kappa Delta. These sororities govern themselves by the Panhellenic Association. This group elects officers from each of the sorority chapters to encourage strong scholarship and community/University service.

The Panhellenic Association hosts a Mother/Daughter Tea and a Faculty/Staff Appleshiner Appreciation. The Mother/Daughter Tea is a chance for Panhellenic to share more information about the sororities and rush. This also gives the women an opportunity to ask questions and get acquainted with Greek Life. Not only does Panhellenic host the tea, but they sponsor the Faculty/Staff Appleshiner Appreciation. On the first day of Appleshiner, the sororities go around campus washing the windows of faculty and staff members' cars. In the meantime, they leave little notes to tell them how much their support is appreciated. On the second day, they host a reception recognizing Faculty and Staff who have made a big influence in the students education and who have supported Greek Life.

Not only does Panhellenic host these two events, they also sponsor events that promote sisterhood among all sororities. Every December a Holiday Party is planned for all five of the sororities. Then in the spring, Panhellenic hosts a picnic by the pond. These socials give the members a chance to intermingle among all the sororities.

If you are interested in more information regarding sorority membership, please contact the Director of Student Activities at 890-6445.
