| The UAH GSA formed back
in early 1993 and was composed of a few (less than 10) graduate students from different
schools at the University who took a serious interest in the quality of education here at
UAH and an unselfish concern about graduate student issues. This is a brief listing of some of the achievements and
activities that the GSA has accomplished since its inception.
- Library privileges for graduate students to match those
of staff - semester checkouts instead of 3 weeks
- Publication of Student Instructor Evaluation (SIE)
scores
- TA Training Workshops
- Passage of TA Voice Resolution (with SGA)
- Establishment of a World Wide Web page and email
distribution list
- Becoming member of the National Association For Graduate
Professional Students (NAGPS) and thus making available to UAH graduate students an
alternate, more comprehensive health insurance plan
- The GSA "Bookworms" participated in Intramural
Volleyball at UAH (and took 4th place in the Fall of 1994)
- Provided judges for the Science Olympiad for High School
students and for the State Science and Engineering Fair
- Worked with the School of Graduate Studies on keeping
alive the extracurricular credit hour policy for TA's and GRA's
- Establishing a graduate Legislator-at-large position on
the SGA.
- Forming a Graduate Advisory Committee (GAC) with the
dean of the School of Graduate Studies
- The GSA received club of the year award in March
of 1996
Currently, we are pursuing the following :
- Increasing the number of graduate students with e-mail
accounts as a tool to keep graduate students informed of decisions that affect them.
- Encourage the Deans to get offer letters out to TA's
earlier and to include the actual TA assignment in the offer letter rather than making TA
class assignments a week or even only one day in advance.
- Volunteering to speak to high school students about
graduate student research areas
- Increasing the interest in getting graduate students
more involved with UAH activities and clubs.
