Chief Warrant Officer Peter Gillies graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from Michigan State University. He then returned to Massachusetts where he taught high school band, chorus, and beginning band for five years. He enlisted in the army in 1989 and served as a tuba player in army bands in Colorado and Maryland. In 1995 he was appointed as a Warrant Officer and has commanded the 1st Cavalry Division Band at Fort Hood where he deployed to Bosnia in support of Operation Joint Forge, the 2nd Infantry Division Band, Uijongbu South Korea, the 399th Army Band, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and the 82nd Airborne Division Band, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He commanded the U.S. Army Japan Band (296th Army Band) Camp Zama Japan from August 2006 to July 2009. He is now stationed at Redstone Arsenal, AL preparing for the AMC Band's move from Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD to Huntsville.

He holds a Master of Music Degree in Music Performance from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and a Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He has served on the Faculty of the University of Phoenix teaching business management. He is a Senior Lecturer at Tiffin University, OH teaching graduate education and is an Adjunct Faculty member at the University of Alabama-Huntsville and Calhoun Community College teaching music.

His military education includes the Basic noncommissioned officer’s course, Warrant Officer Candidate School, Warrant Officer Basic, Advanced, Staff, and Senior Staff Courses, Air Assault School, Basic Airborne School, and the U.S. Army Advanced Airborne School Jumpmaster course.

His awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, the NATO Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Ribbon, the Overseas Ribbon, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He wears the Air Assault badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Australian Parachutist Badge, and the Horatio Gates Medal.

Chief Gillies is married to Jo Myers. They have a 16-year old son Tyler.
