Head Coach Laura Taube
Laura Taube is in her 14th year as head volleyball coach at UAH. In the last 13 seasons, the Lady Chargers have accumulated a 329-162 overall record under Taube and have finished in the top three spots of the Gulf South Conference in all but one season. Taube has also had five teams advance to the NCAA post season tournament.
In 1998, Taube led the Lady Chargers to their first ever trip to the NCAA Regional playoffs. Taube's team finished third in the South Central Region Tournament. The Lady Chargers capped the season with a 32-6 overall record.
Taube took the Lady Chargers back to the regional tournament in 1999, finishing fourth. The Lady Chargers finished 29-6 on the season and Taube was named GSC East Coach of the Year for the second time.
In 2000, Taube led an inexperienced team to the GSC semifinals and a 22-14 finish. In the process, she picked up her 200th career victory when UAH beat Henderson State on October 14. She followed up that effort by leading the Lady Chargers back to the postseason in 2001. After a two year absence, Taube guided the Lady Chargers back to the Regionals in 2004 and 2005.
Taube received her first GSC Coach of the Year honor in 1995, after finishing second in the conference with a 29-13 overall record. She is currently ranked fourth for volleyball coaching career wins and third overall for the highest career coaching winning percentage in the GSC.
In 1996, UAH was ranked 8th in the NCAA South Central Region for six weeks, and ended the season with a 37-7 overall record. Another great season is on the horizon. In 1997, Taube celebrated her 100th win on September 6, 1997 in a match against Mississippi University for Women which was coached by Susan Lowe, a former UAH volleyball player. She finished the season with an overall record of 35-10, finishing second in the conference with a 12-2 record.
As assistant softball coach in 1996, Taube helped lead UAH's inaugural softball team to a conference championship title in their first year of existence, becoming the first ever Charger sport to do so since becoming members of the NCAA.
Prior to UAH, Taube taught and coached at Spring Garden Middle School (St. Joseph, MO) for ten years. During seven of those, she also coached volleyball and basketball at Benton High School (St. Joseph, MO). Her volleyball team at Benton posted an 81-44-1 overall season record and she boasted four conference championships in those seven years.
In addition to her duties on the volleyball court, Taube is also is a member of the Southern Region Volleyball Association, the American Volleyball Coaches Association and the United States Volleyball Association. Taube works a number of volleyball summer camps, including those at the University of Alabama, as well as UAH.
Taube earned a degree in physical education and health from Benedictine College (Atchison, KS) where she lettered four years in basketball and three years in volleyball. In 1982, her senior season, Taube was all-tournament team selection at the district qualifying tournament and an all-district selection in the NAIA District 10.
Joan was named assistant coach for the Lady Charger volleyball program in the spring of 2003. In 2004, she accepted the additional responsibility of managing the UAH Athletics Camp program.
The Huntsville native had served as a volunteer assistant since 1998. She has also assisted with game operations during home matches as well as serving as a sports information representative on road trips.
Joan is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, where she earned a BS degree in Athletic Administration and Coaching and Secondary Education. She also earned a minor in Science.
