The UAH volleyball team got the 2003 season off to a good start by winning three of four matches in their own invitational tournament. The Lady Chargers took wins over Christian Brothers, Newberry and Central Arkansas, while suffering their first loss of the season to Edinboro.
On Saturday, the Lady Chargers swept Christian Brothers 30-19, 30-13, 30-23. UAH dominated the match, smacking down 48 kills, while limiting CBU to only 28. Meanwhile, the Lady Charger defense forced 25 CBU attack errors.
In the match against Newberry, UAH rolled in the first two games, winning 30-19 and 30-19. But, in game three the Lady Chargers failed to finish the job, losing 30-23. In the deciding game, the determined visitors pushed the Lady Chargers hard, but in the end, UAH came away with a 30-26 win.
The second day of the tournament didn't began well for UAH. The Lady Chargers suffered their first loss of the season, a 3-1 setback to Edinboro University. The Fighting Scots beat the Lady Chargers 30-24, 19-30, 30-26, 30-21. However, UAH got off the deck to sweep Central Arkansas 30-23, 30-25, 30-22.
In the loss to Edinboro, the Lady Chargers had 13 serving errors and were outhit 66-53. However, in the match against UCA, UAH did a much better job of avoiding the unforced errors. As a team, the Lady Chargers hit .327 for the match, knocking down 51 kills in 107 attempts, while committing only 16 errors.
For the weekend, Emily Miller paced the UAH offense with 53 kills. She also had 25 digs and 11 blocks (one solo). Kristian Kleminsky had 44 kills and six aces. Melissa Feldmann added 38 kills and led the team in digs with 53. Molly Healey tallied 31 kills and 28 digs, while Bethany Holder finished with 28 kills, 15 digs and 11 blocks. Samantha Polkowski racked up 153 assists during the tournament, averaging, 10.93 per game.
