Lady Chargers clinch tournament spot...Miller named Player of the Week

Antoine Bell, UAH Sports Information

The Lady Charger volleyball team secured a berth in the 2003 Gulf South Conference tournament over the weekend with a pair of wins. The Lady Chargers rebounded from a loss earlier in the week to Lee University with a sweep of Valdosta State and an upset on the road of No. 25 West Florida. The Lady Chargers, who have won six of their last eight matches, are tied for third place with the Lady Argonauts and a game out of second place behind Montevallo.

UAH 3, No. 25 West Florida 1

The Lady Charger volleyball team clinched a spot in the Gulf South Conference tournament with a 30-22, 32-34, 30-27, 30-27 win over 25th ranked West Florida in Pensacola. The win avenged a loss earlier this season to the Lady Argonauts at Spragins Hall. Sophomore hitter Emily Miller was on fire leading the Lady Chargers with 23 kills and 24 digs. Junior hitter Kristian Kleminsky added 20 kills, Melissa Feldmann tallied 17 and Bethany Holder 10. Sophomore setter Samantha Polkowski was outstanding, passing out 67 assists.

UAH 3, Valdosta State 0

The season can't be over fast enough for Valdosta State (2-22, 0-10). the Lady Chargers added to their season-long misery with a 30-26, 30-22, 30-14 wipeout. Emily Miller led UAH with the first of two double-doubles for the week, pacing the Lady Chargers with 14 kills and 11 digs. Kristian Kleminsky added 12 kills and Samantha Polkowski dished out 42 assists.

Lee 3, UAH 1

The Lady Chargers' unblemished record against Lee University was tarnished with their first loss to the Lady Flames. Lee earned their first win ever over UAH by the score of 30-27, 26-30, 30-19, 30-26. Flames' hitter Bruna Langner burned the Lady Chargers for 20 kills. Meanwhile, the Lee defense was very stingy, holding UAH to 50 kills, and a .191 hitting percentage. Emily Miller still hammered home 16 kills to lead the Lady Chargers. Melissa Feldmann tallied 12 kills the 12 digs, while Mary Beth Key had 22 digs and Samantha Polkowski 47 assists.

Miller earns team's first Player of the Week honor of the season

It took nearly a full season, but finally someone from UAH has been named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Miller earned GSC East Division Offensive Player of the Week honors after leading the Lady Chargers in all three matches last week. The Mobile native tallied 53 kills, averaging 4.82 per game through 11 games. She also posted a .432 hitting percentage. Miller added 43 digs for an average of 3.91 per game. She also had seven blocks, three assists and one ace. Miller posted two double-doubles on the week. Her 23 kills and 24 digs led to UAH’s upset of #25 West Florida.

Next up: The Lady Chargers have a chance to avenge the loss to Lee University last week in Tennessee on Thursday night (7 p.m.) at Spragins Hall. The Lady Chargers are 14-1 against Lee. Then, on Sunday (2 p.m.), GSC East nemesis North Alabama visits Huntsville. The Lady Chargers will be attempting to stop an eight match losing streak to the Lady Lions.
