Opening weekend cruel to Lady Chargers

Antoine Bell, UAH Sports Information

Coach Laura Taube knew that her young Lady Chargers would have to suffer some growing pains. However, after the UAH Invitational, Coach Taube needs a headache powder of the extra strength variety.

Missouri-St. Louis def. UAH 3-0
Carson Newman def. UAH 3-2

The Lady Chargers looked totally confused against Missouri-St. Louis. They shot themselves in the foot with careless errors, which included 10 service errors and 11 ball handling errors. Missouri-St. Louis also had their problems also committing 10 service errors. However, the Riverwomen out-hit the Lady Chargers 44-29.

The Lady Chargers put up a good fight in the first game of the match. However, they ran out of gas down the stretch and UMSL came away with a 30-26 win. The loss seemed to take the wind out of the UAH sails. They battled in the second game, but fell short 30-24. In the final game, the Riverwomen took an early 12 point lead and cruised to a 30-17 victory to close out the match.

Emily Miller led the Lady Chargers with eight kills and Samantha Polkowski passed out 24 assists.

The Lady Chargers tried to shake off the dreadful effects of the loss to the Riverwomen when they took on Carson Newman. UAH came out fired up, taking the first game 30-27. In the second game, the Lady Chargers continued to roll pulling away to what was shaping up to be two straight. However, the wheels came off just as the Lady Chargers stood on the doorstep to a 2-0 match lead. Leading 29-24, the Lady Chargers couldn't put the Lady Eagles away. Carson Newman came roaring back to steal a 32-30 win.

The momentum shifted across the nets into the Carson Newman court. The Lady Eagles took the next game 30-24 to take a 2-1 match lead. The Lady Chargers got off of the canvas in the fourth game, fighting off a late rally by Carson Newman to take a 30-28 victory and force a fifth game. In the deciding game, the two teams remained close until the midway point. Then Carson Newman pulled away for a 15-12 win.

Emily Miller finished the match with 21 kills, 21 digs and five blocks. Kristian Kleminsky added 18 kills and 21 digs and Bethany Holder tallied 13 kills. Polkowski dished out a season-high 54 assists in the loss.

The Chargers (1-3) will try to get back on the winning track next weekend at the North Dakota State Invitational in Fargo, ND.

Saint Leo def. UAH 3-1
UAH def. Northwest Missouri State 3-1

The Lady Charger volleyball team rebounded from a season opening loss to Saint Leo with a hard-earned 3-1 (30-22, 23-30, 30-28, 30-28) win over Northwest Missouri State in the 2002 UAH Volleyball Invitational. Freshman hitter Emily Miller led the way with 22 kills and Samantha Polkowski tallied 42 assists. Senior libero Cathryn Sterling finished up with 16 digs.

In the earlier match, the Lady Chargers looked strong at times but in the end, however, in the end, youth and inexperience proved costly as UAH fell 3-1 (34-32, 30-20, 32-34, 30-21). Sophomore hitter Kristian Kleminsky paced the Lady Chargers with 15 kills, while junior transfer Daniella Bragg had 13 kills and redshirt freshman Molly Healy added 11.
