Lady Chargers win regular season finale...but settle for third place in the East

Antoine Bell, UAH Sports Information

The Lady Chargers gave seniors Whitney Mock and Cathryn Sterling a big send off with a fairly easy sweep of Valdosta State. However, the win was tempered by news from Harrogate, TN. West Alabama came from two games back to beat Lincoln Memorial. With the win, the Lady Tigers earned second place in the GSC East and the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament in Florence. The Lady Chargers have to settle for the third seed and will face either Henderson State or Arkansas Tech in the first round of the tournament.

UAH def. Valdosta State 3-0

The Lady Charger volleyball team gave its seniors the proper send off on Sunday afternoon at Spragins Hall, cruising by Valdosta State 30-22, 30-20, 30-24. Coach Laura Taube let everyone get into the action during the regular season finale and each player made the best of their opportunity.

Freshman hitter Emily Miller and sophomore Molly Healey each had eight kills to pace the Lady Chargers. Freshman setter Heather Grumke had 17 assists and four kills, splitting time with sophomore setter Samantha Polkowski, who had 12 assists. Senior libero Cathryn Sterling left her stamp on Spragins Hall with 15 digs in her final home match. Follow senior Whitney Mock had eight digs and two kills. As a team, the Lady Chargers piled up 11 aces and 8.5 blocks.

West Alabama def. UAH 3-0

The Lady Chargers needed to beat West Alabama on Thursday to clinch second place in the GSC East and the East No. 2 seed in the GSC tournament. However, the Lady Tigers had something to say about that. Instead of locking up the No. 2 spot, the Lady Charger were swept by West Alabama in Livingston. The result is now a tie between the two teams.

All three games were classic battles, but UWA came away 31-29, 35-33 and 30-24 win. UAH fell to 14-18 and 10-5, while the Tigers improved to 23-12 and 10-5.

Emily Miller was the only Lady Charger in double figures with 11 kills. Molly Healey and Kristian Kleminsky finished the match with nine kills each. Heather Grumke tallied 34 assists, while Healey led on defense with 13 digs.

UNA def. UAH 3-0

Ninth ranked North Alabama erased any doubt about the location of this year's 2002 Gulf South Conference tournament. Prior to Tuesday night, the Lady Charger volleyball team had an outside chance to catch the GSC East leading Lady Lions in the standings. But, UNA brushed UAH aside with a 30-27, 30-21, 30-18 sweep in Florence to lock up the top seed and earn the right to host the tournament on Nov. 15-16.

UNA outhit the Lady Chargers 65-32. No UAH player was able to muster double-digit kills. Emily Miller and Kristian Kleminsky had nine kills each to lead the effort. Heather Grumke added 28 assists and three aces. Anna Bondarenko paced UNA (24-4, 14-0) with 15 kills and 14 digs.
