
Lady Chargers remain in second place after 2-1 week

The Lady Chargers (12-15, 9-2) lost a hard-fought match to GSC juggernaut UNA, but rebounded to keep sole possession of second place in the GSC East with wins over Montevallo and West Florida.
UAH def West Florida 3-2
The visiting West Florida Lady Argonauts had UAH volleyball fans sweating bullets on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Chargers were against the ropes trailing 2-1 after three games. But, the home team got off the deck to win the final two games to squeeze out a 22-30, 30-22, 28-30, 30-20, 15-13 victory.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Lady Chargers, led by Emily Miller who finished with 18 kills. Kristian Kleminsky had 17 kills, while Molly Healey tallied 15 kills and 11 digs, and Kristen Henley came up with 12 kills. Cathryn Sterling led the defense with 16 digs and Heather Grumke passed out 61 assists and had eight serving aces. Kristy Krause paced West Florida with 22 kills and 15 digs.
The match went back and forth all day. After splitting the first two games, the Argos jumped out to a big lead in game three. The Lady Chargers found themselves in a 16-6 hole. But, they chipped away at the UWF lead, cutting it down to 29-28 after a combined block by Healey and Henley. However, Krause put the game away with a spike through the UAH defense.
The Lady Chargers controlled the fourth game, holding a comfortable lead throughout to force a fifth game. UAH came into the match with a 4-1 record when the match went five games.
Midway through the match, West Florida seemed primed to pull off their first win ever over the Lady Chargers, leading 9-6. That lead grew to 12-9 after an attack error by Kleminsky. However, the Lady Chargers scored four unanswered points to pull ahead 13-12. An error by Whitney Mock tied the game at 13-all. But, Jodi Goetz's serve out of bounds gave the ball back to the Lady Chargers with the match on the line. Miller put the match on ice by blocking Jessica Bragion's attack.
UAH def Montevallo 3-1
The UAH volleyball team ended a four-game losing streak with a 30-20, 30-27, 16-30, 30-27 win on the road over the University of Montevallo. The win helps the Lady Chargers keep a solid grip on second place in the Gulf South Conference East Division at 8-2 and completes a season sweep of the Lady Falcons. UAH improved to 11-15 overall.
Freshman leading scorer Emily Miller paced the Lady Chargers with 16 kills and 19 digs. Kristian Kleminsky added 12 kills, while setter Heather Grumke tallied 47 assists and 12 digs.
UNA def. UAH 3-1
The UAH volleyball team put up a brave fight, but in the end, No. 10 North Alabama was too strong, knocking off the Lady Chargers 3-1 at Spragins Hall. The Lady Chargers fell to 10-15 and 7-2 in the GSC East, while UNA improved to 18-4 and 8-0. The loss was UAH's fourth straight and seventh consecutive setback to UNA dating back to 1999.
Emily Miller led the Lady Chargers with 19 kills and Kristian Kleminsky added 14. Heather Grumke had 43 assists, while Cathryn Sterling finished with 20 digs. Yana Ninova and Anna Bondarenko had 20 kills each to pace UNA.
UNA led throughout the opening game, fighting off several comeback efforts by UAH. The Lady Chargers trailed by as much as 10 at 23-13 before making a run at the Lions. A service error by Eva Irungaray pulled the Lady Chargers to within six at 25-19. However, the Lions withstood the rally to take the first game 30-23.
The Lady Chargers stunned the Lions in the second game, breaking open a close game to win 30-27. The late burst was keyed by a flurry of service aces by Ashley Otwell. The score was tied at 18-all when Otwell put together three straight aces, giving UAH a 21-18 lead. After an error by Otwell cut the lead to 21-19, the Chargers went on a 6-3 run to take a 27-22 advantage. UNA rallied to close to within 29-27, but a serving error gave the Chargers the win, knotting the match at a game apiece.
UNA roared out to take a 30-15 win in game three, then fought off the determined Lady Chargers to clinch the match with a 30-24 victory in the final game.
