Lady Chargers slip in poll...finally home after splitting four at CMSU
Antoine Bell, UAH Sports Information

Two losses in the Jennies Classic at Central Missouri State University over the weekend have sent the Lady Chargers tumbling to No. 21 in the latest AVCA/NCAA D-II National poll. That's seven spots down from last week's poll.

The Lady Chargers will finally get a chance to play a home match this weekend. They will open their 2001 Gulf South Conference schedule against West Florida and Valdosta State this weekend at Spragins Hall. The Argonauts visit Huntsville on Saturday and Valdosta State comes to town on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the 14th-ranked Lady Chargers split at the Jennies Classic at Central Missouri State University over the weekend. UAH beat Washburn 3-0, but lost a five-game classic to host No. 22 CMSU 3-2 on Friday.

Then, on Saturday, the Lady Chargers opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of Wisconsin-Parkside. However, the joy didn't last long as No. 24 Rockhurst dropped the Lady Chargers 3-0. UAH will bring home an 8-3 record.

UAH def. Washburn 30-15, 30-14, 30-21

The Lady Chargers improved to 2-1 in the South Central Region with a 3-0 sweep of Washburn. Ellen LaFiore led the way for UAH, tallying 16 kills. Melissa Feldmann and Erin Denny added 10 kills each and Jane Baugartner piled up 41 assists.

#24 Central Missouri State def. UAH 26-30, 31-29, 30-23, 24-30, 15-10

Last season, UAH upset Central Missouri State in its invitational tournament. This time, the 24th-ranked Jennies were determined not to let that happen.

In a classic five-game duel, the Lady Chargers came up short. Things went swimmingly through the first game as the Lady Chargers took the 4-point win. In the second game, CMSU avoided falling behind 2-0 by edging out the Lady Chargers 31-29. The Jennies also won game three 30-23 to take a 2-1 match lead. However, UAH refused to die, coming back to win the fourth game 30-24 to force a deciding game.

In the fifth game, the Lady Chargers committed six hitting errors and had only five kills en route to a 15-10 loss. The loss was just the second of the season for the 14th-ranked Lady Chargers.

Ellen LaFiore finished the game with 24 kills, 14 digs and four blocks for UAH. Lindsay Dunham and Melissa Feldmann each had 12 kills and Erin Denny totaled 11 kills. Jane Baumgartner passed out 57 assists in the match.

UAH def. Wisconsin-Parkside 30-16, 30-19, 30-26

The Lady Chargers rebounded from their Friday night loss to Central Missouri State by spanking Wisconsin-Parkside 30-16, 30-19, 30-25.

#22 Rockhurst def. UAH 30-28, 30-22, 31-29

The Lady Chargers ran into a buzzsaw when they faced No. 22 Rockhurst in their final match of the tournament. In another tightly contested battled, the Lady Chargers fell short.

The Lady Hawks trimmed UAH 30-28, 30-22 and 31-29 in three tough matches. The loss dropped the Lady Chargers to 8-3.
