Lady Chargers on fire after 6-0 week...LaFiore earns second GSC Player of the Week honor
Antoine Bell, UAH Sports Information

(10-15-01) The 23rd ranked Lady Chargers blazed through a perfect week, winning all six of their matches. Five of the six wins came on the road.

UAH middle blocker Ellen LaFiore earned her second Gulf South Conference Player of the Week honor of the season.

LaFiore led the Chargers with 118 kills (4.72 kpg), 14 service aces (0.56 spg) and a .441 hitting percentage in 25 games. She also earned All-Classic honors at the Henderson State Lady Reddies Classic.

After suffering through a 1-2 week two weeks ago, the Lady Chargers took a short break. After a week off, the well-rested Lady Chargers slammed West Georgia 30-12, 30-16, 30-19 in just over an hour.

Senior middle blocker Ellen LaFiore 17 kills and five blocks. Senior hitter Erin Denny tallied 11 kills while sophomore Melissa Feldmann finished with 10 kills, two service aces and a pair of blocks. Senior setter Jane Baumgartner had 41 assists in the match.

It was fortunate that the Lady Chargers breezed past West Georgia on Monday, because they wouldn't get a chance to rest before they would be on the road to Mississippi to take on MUW the next day. The Blues had given the Lady Chargers a fierce battle in the first meeting at Spragins Hall. UAH came out on top 3-1. This time around, it would take five games, but the Lady Chargers escaped with the 3-2 win.

The Lady Chargers won the first game 33-31. However, the Blues came back to win the next two games 30-25 and 30-27. With their backs against the wall, the Lady Chargers composed themselves and took the final two games 30-20, 15-10 to take the match.

Ellen LaFiore paced the UAH attack with 26 kills, three blocks and three service aces. Melissa Feldmann added 18 kills and four aces, while Erin Denny tallied 11 kills and Lindsay Dunham 10. Jane Baumgartner was busy during the match passing out 57 assist. On defense, Cathryn Sterling led with 21 digs.

The Lady Chargers finished the week with an impressive performance in the Lady Reddies Classic at Henderson State University. The No. 23 Lady Chargers beat Henderson State30-32, 30-22, 25-30, 30-28, 15-9, Northwest Missouri State 30-24, 30-20, 38-36, Emporia State 27-30, 30-23, 30-14, 30-23 and Arkansas Tech 30-21, 30-22, 18-30 and 15-2 to improve to 19-6.

Ellen LaFiore piled up 75 kills, 10 aces, 27 digs and eight blocks during the tournament to lead UAH.

The road warriors continue their journey this week with visits to Livingston, Valdosta and Pensacola.
