The evening started out on a high note, but came crashing down in a hurry as North Alabama beat UAH 3-0 in a Gulf South Conference match at Spragins Hall. The loss was the Lady Chargers sixth in the last eight matches. Meanwhile, UNA (15-2, 5-0) remained unbeaten in the GSC.
Before the match began, Lady Charger head coach Laura Taube presented former standout setter and present student assistant Lisa Spencer with a plaque commemorating her record-breaking career at UAH. That was the last pleasant part of the evening for the Lady Chargers.
UNA went right to work in the first game, taking advantage of several defensive miscues. The Lady Lions had five aces in the first game and went on to totally blank the Lady Chargers 15-0.
In the second game, Charger fans got a scare when leading scorer Ellen LaFiore went down after turning an ankle. She would leave the game very briefly, then like a true team leader, return to action. However, she would be hampered by the injury throughout the match.
The Chargers scored first in the game, but UNA reeled of the next seven points. In fact the Lady Lions looked like they were going to cruise to an easy 2-0 match lead. But, the Lady Chargers got off the deck and closed to within 13-9. But, UNA would withstand the assault and go on to take game two 15-9.
The comeback effort seemed to drain UAH. The Lady Lions rolled out to a 10-1 lead in the match clincher and went on to win 15-3.
Nesrin Seckin and Jana Ninova led UNA with 14 kills each. Ashley Moffitt finished the match with 34 assist, while Eva Tcholakova tallied 14 digs and five aces. Amy Bernstein also had five aces for UNA. As a team, the Lady Lions piled up 13 aces.
For UAH (6-8, 2-3), LaFiore led with 10 kills. Cathryn Sterling finished with 27 assists and 10 digs, while Melissa Feldman had 13 digs.
