The Lady Chargers (10-9, 4-3) avenged a loss to Montevallo Tuesday night. However, it wouldn't be easy. In a 2-hour knock- down drag-out war, UAH outspiked the Lady Falcons 3-2.
In the process, Ellen LaFiore and Jane Baumgartner crushed school and Gulf South Conference records with their performances. LaFiore piled up a UAH and GSC record 42 kills in the match. She also broke the UAH record for attack attempts with 74. Added to those numbers, LaFiore also had a career-high 27 digs and 7 blocks (6 solo). Baumgartner dished out 86 assists to break her own record of 76 which she set only four days ago. She also had 17 digs.
As a team, the UAH also wiped away two other 4-day-old records. The Lady Chargers had 99 kills and 93 assists in the match, which knocks out the marks that UAH set against Central Missouri State of 92 kills and 77 assists.
Their were several other Lady Chargers with impressive numbers in the match. Erin Denny finished with 19 kills. Lindsay Dunham had 15 kills, while Melissa Feldman had 15 kills and 20 digs. Ashley Otwell also had double-digit digs, finishing the evening with 12.
The match itself went back and forth all night long. The Lady Chargers won the first game in dominant fashion, 15-9. However, Montevallo rebounded to win the second game 15-13.
UAH took the third game 15-13 and were poised to put the Lady Falcons (22-6, 6-3) away. But, Montevallo refused to go away. The Lady Falcons jumped out to a 7-1 lead. UAH fought back to pull in front late. The Lady Chargers had several chances to win the match when the score was 14-13, but Montevallo kept fighting. The two teams battled for nearly an hour in the fourth game. The Lady Falcons finally shook off the home team 20-18.
In the final rally game, the Lady Chargers rolled out to a 12-2 lead and cruised on to take the match 15-6.
The Lady Chargers will get some much-needed rest before traveling to Arkadelphia, Arkansas to play in the Henderson State University, Lady Reddie Classic this weekend.
